Job Description: Senior Technical Specialist / Mainframe Architect

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and versatile Senior Technical Specialist / Mainframe Architect to join our dynamic professional services team at Telus Digital. The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive knowledge of mainframe systems and architecture and be capable of handling all aspects of assessing requests and projects, designing solutions, formulating plans, organizing resources and schedules, and executing/delivering/testing solutions.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Technical Specialist / Mainframe Architect, you will be responsible for leading end-to-end mainframe solution design and delivery, including requirements assessment, architecture formulation, implementation planning, and testing across mainframe platforms, while providing expert guidance to clients and teams.

Solution Assessment and Design:

• Lead the process of assessing mainframe requests and projects, ensuring alignment with business needs and technical feasibility.

• Act as a Subject Matter Expert for mainframe systems, architecture, and best practices.

• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and refine detailed business and technical requirements.

• Translate business needs into mainframe technical specifications and architectural designs.

• Develop functional and non-functional specifications for mainframe solutions.

Implementation and Execution:

• Design and deliver mainframe solutions tailored to client needs, ensuring scalability and reliability.

• Formulate detailed implementation plans, including resource allocation, timelines, and milestones.

• Organize and lead technical teams through solution development and execution phases.

• Implement and configure mainframe systems, ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure.

• Conduct rigorous testing and validation of solutions, including user acceptance testing (UAT).

• Oversee deployment and ensure smooth transition of solutions into production environments.

Optimization and Maintenance:

• Propose and implement enhancements to existing mainframe systems and solutions.

• Provide ongoing support and guidance for complex mainframe-related issues.

• Collaborate on continuous improvement initiatives based on feedback from support teams.

• Maintain comprehensive documentation for all implemented solutions and system configurations.

• Conduct knowledge transfer sessions on implemented solutions and customizations.

Collaboration and Leadership:

• Work closely with Business Analysts, Project Managers, and technical teams to ensure alignment and successful delivery.

• Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming sessions, and regular sync meetings to address recurring issues and plan proactive measures.

• Provide technical mentorship and training to team members on mainframe systems and best practices.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in mainframe architecture, implementation, and administration.

• Expertise in mainframe systems, including COBOL, JCL, IMS, DB2, and Assembler.

• Proven experience in designing and delivering mainframe solutions for batch and online systems.

• Strong understanding of system-level storage protection, RACF access, and ECSA configurations.

• Excellent communication, client-facing skills, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with mainframe modernization projects and integrations with cloud or distributed systems.

• Familiarity with Agile and DevOps methodologies.

• Knowledge of system-level debugging tools and techniques.

• Certifications in mainframe technologies or related fields.

• Experience working in a managed service provider environment.
